peek a boo retail

The best (and most fun) way to connect your customers to your product is to let them see it in its growing stage. I’ve designed many many retail dispensary locations with walk-in humidors, clone rooms and peek a book vision into manufacturing spaces. I have to admit, they’re fun to create and every time I design one, I learn more and more about the optimal conditions. The goal in retail interior design is always to sell more product, attract new customers and stay true to your brand vision.

Clone Room

You’re going to kill all of your stock if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Temperature and Humidity Control: Maintain a consistent temperature between 70-80°F (21-27°C) and humidity level between 70-80%. Plants will thrive in a warm, humid environment. Use HVAC systems or humidifiers/dehumidifiers to regulate the temperature and humidity levels.

  1. Keep it clean: Ensure a clean and sterile environment to prevent the spread of pests and diseases. Use materials like stainless steel or food-grade plastics for surfaces that are easy to clean and disinfect regularly. And make sure you clean your room daily.
  2. Lighting: Provide great lighting conditions for clones, typically using fluorescent or LED lights. Aim for a light intensity of around 400-600 µmol/m²/s, simulating the light spectrum similar to the vegetative stage. Consider using adjustable light fixtures to accommodate the varying heights of clones as they grow.
  3. Air Circulation and Ventilation: Dead air = dead plants. Good air circulation and ventilation is key to prevent stale air and control odors. Use tiny hidden fans to promote air movement. They are commonly clipped undereneath the shelving/racking. Install carbon filters to mitigate odors and exhaust systems to remove the excess heat and humidity.
  4. Make it FUN. Visually accessible. I can’t stress this enough. Being able to interact with the plant in its unpackaged, natural state is like a walk through Willy Wonka’s factory. Your customers will love it, remember it and tell their friends about it.

Walk In Humidors

Humidors when done right give an aire of sophistication, wealth and exceptional quality. It feels like whatever you’re about to see is exclusive, high quality and crafted just for you. So when I’m designing humidors, I tend to lean into that vibe. Here are a few things I like to add:

  • Individually lit shelving
  • Exceptional odor control and air circulation
  • A high table with seating
  • Peek a boo glass windows and doors

Whether walk-in cannabis humidors are allowed or prohibited depends on the specific regulations set by each state’s governing cannabis authority. (Look it up before you build it!) Some states may permit it as long as they comply with all of the compliance requirements. Some are only allowed for employee use or storage. Make sure you consult with your legal team when planning a walk in or clone room.
